A Mystery in a Castle...Whodunnit?

BRUSSELS -- It seems a mystery worthy of Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's fictional Belgian detective: A lord goes missing from his chateau, leaving behind a spent cartridge and a trail of blood. His body is discovered 15 days later, buried in a forest.

Belgian newspapers Saturday were chewing over what's being called the "Murder at the Castle" – the case of 34-year-old Stijn Saelens, the lord of Wingene Castle. And the speculation, fueled by police arrests and questioning, has run rampant.

Was he done in by his in-laws, who opposed his plan to move to Australia with his wife and four children to take up organic farming? Or by Chechen criminals operating in Belgium? Or perhaps by an unholy alliance of the two?

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde, 1860–1900

February 18, 2012 - June 17, 2012.

TRH The Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were in San Francisco to open the exhibition, which is an amazing collection of items by the way.

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde, 1860–1900 is the first major exhibition to explore the unconventional creativity of the British Aesthetic Movement, tracing the evolution of this movement from a small circle of progressive artists and poets, through the achievements of innovative painters and architects, to its broad impact on fashion and the middle-class home. The superb artworks on view encompass the manifold forms of Victorian material culture: the traditional high art of painting, fashionable trends in architecture and interior decoration, handmade and manufactured furnishings for the “artistic” home, art photography and the new modes of dress.

The Cult of Beauty showcases the entirety of the Aesthetic Movement’s output, celebrating the startling beauty and variety of creations by masters as diverse as artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti, James McNeill Whistler, and Edward Burne-Jones and designers E.W. Godwin, William Morris and Christopher Dresser.  The Legion of Honor is the only U.S. venue on the world tour that includes the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Dave and I were invited to attend the previewing cocktail party as guests of Prince and Prince Michael of Kent. We had a lovely time!

More News on Prince FRiso...

Prince Friso was pulled alive from the snow but had to be resucitated and is now in critical condition after being hit by an avalanche nearly 100 feet across and more than 130 feet long while skiing in the village of Lech near Litzen-Zugertobel.
The 43-year-old prince was rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Innsbruck. A government statement said his "life remains at risk", and that he was in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Authorities have sealed the hospital off.
Sources in the Dutch media report the prince is suffering from a fractured skull. Crown Prince Wilhem-Alexander is already believed to be travelling to Austria to be with his brother.
A statement by the palace said: “Prince Friso has today become a victim of an avalanche in the ski resort of Lech. Prince Friso has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Innsbruck in Austria. Physicians describe the condition of the Prince as stable but not out of danger.“

Dutch Prince in Critical Condition After Avalanche in Austria

VIENNA/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch Prince Johan Friso was in critical but stable condition in an Innsbruck hospital's intensive care unit Friday after an avalanche buried him while he was skiing off piste in the Austrian alps, police said.

The Austria Press Agency said the 43-year-old prince, middle son of Queen Beatrix, was in Innsbruck's University clinic.

"After the emergency call, rescue crews were on the scene with rescue helicopters. He could be located immediately and freed," a police official in the western ski resort of Lech told Reuters. The prince had been skiing with a group, he said.

The Dutch royal family often spends winter holidays in Lech in the western province of Vorarlberg - which like other parts of Austria has been blanketed with heavy snow in recent weeks.

Many parts of the country have avalanche alerts in effect.

Prince Johan Friso's older brother is Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his younger brother is Prince Constantijn.

The Infanta Pilar of Spain's Thoughts on the Urdangarín Matter – "Be Quiet...!"

Interviewed by several Spanish journalists while attending a charity bazaar in Madrid, the Infanta doña Pilar was clear and emphatic when asked her opinion concerning the legal troubles affecting her niece's husband, Iñaki Urdangarín.

"We have a constitution that is very clear and well organized when dealing with these matters...the lost word is given by our judges...so until they say something, everyone else just BE QUIET!"

The Spanish press has been relentless in their pursuit for information on alleged corruption incurred by the son-in-law of the King...as if this were something that the Royal Family had engaged in. Making news where there isn't has become the realm of today's press institutions.

Whether the Duke of Palma de Mallorca peddled influences or not, he will have his day in court (25 February 2012) and will give testimony then. His actions are his responsibility, not that of Their Majesties or the Royal House.
